Although $1000 can buy you only a mid-ranged laptop, should you keep in mind that this machine is a perfect combination of performances, design, components and price.

Design
Asus ROG GL522 feels joyful to look at and hold.
It has a slick aluminum lid that makes it very sleek on touch, however, not as much as some of its competitors. Keyboard and Touch bar
ROG GL552 is a simply amazing keyboard, there is also a touch bar, but let’s get started with the good parts.
The ROG GL55s’s keyboard features sinister red light, that gives an extra feel to the gaming ambient. The red feels quite cool and it gets just better. There’s an extra amount of red highlights along the bottom of the W, A, S and D keys, true gamers will know why this is so important. Although, this model’s keyboard is not as deep as the newer models in the series of Republic of Gamers Asus laptops, the keys still felt very snappy and comfortable whether we were typing or enjoying playing games, as a result of a standard actuation weight of 60 grams and 1.87mm of key travel.
The good organization of keyboard enabled Asus to place a 10-keys numpad on the right side (obviously) of the keyboard but, the keys are pretty small upon touching. Either way, better something than nothing, right?
Apparently the touch bar doesn’t get the same attention from Asus as the powerful, beasty keyboard this laptop offers because of the less backlight compared to the keyboard. However, it is still very shiny and responsive. It allowed us to get used to it quite quickly, and registered our swipes, clicks and multitouching, generally two-finger scrolling.
All in all, as a gamer, I don’t find touch bar too necessary. There are some problems with the multi touching, and touch bar can appear to hardly recognize whether are we after the left or the right click, which is later solved with mouse-under-clicks in latest models of ROG series.
This problem is easily solved with plugging a real, mechanical mouse in the one of the USB ports , because after all, touch bar is not completely necessary to the gaming experience, as the vast majority of gamers uses mouse for their endeavors.
Display
The GL552’s 15.6-inch screen is seen on the most of the best gaming laptops, the 1920 x 1080 is very accurate, produces clean and sharp picture and is very vibrant and color rich. It gives a delightful, relaxing gaming experience and makes watching movies very comfortable. It also has a matte coating that proves itself very handy, because the users don’t see their reflection or have to deal with it, as it’s a very annoying and disrupting experience.
I used this laptop to watch various movies, trailers or general videos that appear on social media, and I was merely satisfied, the screen was sharp and it produced great image no matter what I used the screen for.
However, most of the laptops with a touch of a new generations rely on the IPS panel screens, as they are more efficient when it comes to gaming experience but don’t contribute to it widely. This laptop uses a TN panel. This is a bit old-fashioned as laptops and monitors in general used this kind of technology over five years ago. The issue lays in a bad-quality angles viewing and even though the technology keeps advancing this issue hasn’t been solved yet.
The view from the left or right side is good, however being forced to stare from the lower position or stand way above the laptop will result in very bad-quality picture that seems either washed off and dark. This doesn’t affect the gaming because nobody will stand on feet while gaming, unless we’re in a rush to open the door, check the store or some different issue arises.
Audio
Just like most of the ROG models, GL552 has stereo speakers that feature SonicMaster tech. Its main function lays in enhancing the general quality of audio and produces rich, top-notch audio. However we’ve concluded that it’s not of such high-quality as rumored. The audio doesn’t have the certain depth and sharpness as the other systems do, which is a bit disappointment.
In most cases, audio issues are easy to overcome. To not have to deal with listening to the shallow audio, without sense or depth, the best solution is to buy high-quality headphones, and if you’re good at researching, finding a good pair of headphones that are inexpensive and effective is an easy task to do.
Switching on different system will significantly improve the quality of the audio. Eventually fix the impact problem. However, it isn’t a permanent solution, at least not as good as portable pair of speakers and headphones are.
Heat
Managing heat is mandatory, not just on laptops but desktop machines as well. Regulating the heat transfer and management in-depth affects the work and performance of our system resulting in stuttering, lagging, crashing or even worse- laptop shutting down in a time of our biggest need. To avoid this, providing your laptop with a valuable cooling system is of utmost importance. Remember that the regular temperature on graphics card and processor should be between 60 degrees C and 80 degrees C.
This model features a good cooling system, either little and more demanding tasks that were requested had a decent outcome. However, this laptop has a huge problem with its left side, it’s heating easily and that can get very annoying.
In reality, you can achieve some really good gaming time, at very decent temperatures without too many interruptions in the systems. High temperature can result in FPS dropping, and that’s the second enemy after lag.
A friendly advise is to stay away from its left side, you don’t want to get burnt!
Battery Life
You can’t get either portability and price.
Like we mentioned before, gaming laptops compromise their battery life for the gaming of higher quality. Nowadays even high-budget laptops experience issues with batteries, it is simply a problem, a difficulty gaming laptops and their owners experience.
Unfortunately, I can’t praise this laptop for its battery life. The battery can last between 4 hours and 5 hours which is not that bad. It overcame most of the models in the budget and above the budget, by over 2 hours, but still fell behind models such as Acer and Dell.
The sad truth is that you’ll probably have to spend your gaming time against the deck and plugged in the wall, if you are running after a long-term gaming time.
Performance
When it comes to performance, this laptop stands out from the crowd. It is the best model that $1000 and less can buy, the best machine for everyone who craves to play games, but doesn’t get to spend more money on a laptop.
Obviously, desktop computers have always been a cheaper alternative, but the gaming laptops grow in popularity every and each year but I don’t think that they’ll replace the desktops, at least not any time soon.
What puts ASUS ROG GL552 in the same line with its competition, and high-priced laptops, is its graphics card. This laptop is equipped with Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU, third best graphics card in the 9 series. Of course, GTX 970M and GTX 980M are by far better, not to mention the 10 series graphics card but 960M will suffice in all gaming endeavors of today and tomorrow and is estimated to survive at least 2 years, which is more than enough for every gaming laptop.
The games of these days that are less demanding can easily be handled with 80fps to 120fps. While the higher demanding games cannot always be played on ultra but the lower settings such as mid and high can easily take on all the demanding games.
Alongside with this top-notch graphics card for the price, this laptop is equipped with a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700 HQ processor, and 16GB of RAM, though we think that 8GB is fairly enough for a gaming laptop. However, no one will mind 16GB of RAM, as strong RAM can support games that are more demanding but graphics card cannot endure them.
For the storage, this laptop has a nice choice of 256GB solid-state drive and a 1TB hard-drive. This amount of storage will suffice the needs of watching movies, playing games, and regular daily processes. Fair advantage of this laptop lays in it being equipped nearly the same like better-quality laptops that measure higher in price as well.

The Asus ROG GL552 has a preinstalled Windows 10 Home, accompanies with some very useful programs that enhance the general performance of computer, including some handy utilities, Asus Live Update that keeps the system current, Splendid Utility that helps customize the display, and an extremely useful Game First III application, that helps you play your favorite games with high frame per second, and avoid lags and stuttering. Things that I didn’t like
Every laptop has outstanding advantages which is why it’s our favorite. However, those advantages frequently come with disadvantages. In this section we will mention some flaws of this model. Not that they greatly affect the overall system but, we think that it is important to mention it so that people can know that laptops encounter some kind of issues that are easily fixed.
We mentioned that the heating is overall good. The fans spin smoothly and silently, which is good because the audio has couple of downfalls as well. However, a great downfall of this model is the left side of the ventilation. It heats very easily, and it can get very uncomfortable if we choose to hold the laptop on our laps. Choosing a good portable cooler can solve this issue. It is just important not to place your hands on that part in order not to get burnt.
If you’re not constantly gaming and watching movies and you prefer to spend some time on skype, or other video calling programs similar to skype, we have disappointing news. The 1.2-megapixel webcam takes quite poor-quality picture that it gets just ugly. This is expected from the low-priced, laptop models without attitude and it is unusual to see that Asus provides its customers with badly optimized cameras.
We’ve tested camera and despite the environment surrounded by sufficient amount of light, the picture outcame pretty grainy and darker than it should be. This isn’t of significant importance to gamers, but it can still be very annoying to look at and take with. But, considering other interesting components this laptop has, we can easily forget about this minor issue.
We wish that battery lasts a bit longer, but getting to use it over 4 hours is pretty impressive too. Even though the technology keeps developing in the positive, advancing direction, the problem with the battery is inheritant and it persists.
Laptop is pretty sturdy, and a bit heavy. With so many valuable components it should be, but it can get very uncomfortable when you have to drag laptop around. I generally used to carry my laptop a lot to my friend’s place so we can play games together, but I often had pain in my spine. The point with the laptop is to make them thinner in the future, but with the gaming laptops that’s not the case yet.
Good laptop is a laptop that can last more than two years. Time is uncertain and we don’t know what kind of machines to expect in the following years. This laptop has a good predisposition to stay on the top of our list and will meet the requirements of a gamer who wants to be professional but still stay in the budget line.
Summary
The Asus ROG GL552 is one of the most affordable, mid-performance laptops in the market in terms of gaming. It is a lower specification version of the ROG G752 that is one of the best gaming laptop kicking off some of the best MSI gaming laptops. However, this is the more affordable version of it.
It does great job performing amazing gaming experience for your money. The sweetest point of this laptop is its graphics card NVidia GTX 960M that can run some of the most demanding games of today. The screen is a bit bad, and although previous laptops of this models had an IPS screen this one doesn’t. However in some of its releases ROG GL552 has IPS screen and in case you see that one I recommend you to go for it. It is not the perfect laptop and that concept is still pretty hard to achieve, but its performance will suffice some of the more demanding games at reasonable settings.
#2. MSI GL72 6QF-405 17.3″ Gaming Laptop Notebook Geforce GTX 960M i7-6700HQ 8GB 1TB

This laptop is heavier than our Asus winner with 2.8kg but it is still manageable to wear it around, just not too much and too often.
MSI GL72 is equipped with the Intel Core i7 6700HQ 4-quad processor and a GTX 960M graphics card. This combination is pretty good, as it allows you to play favorite games at very reasonable settings, just like with Asus laptop. This option exists on most of the mid-priced gaming laptops, but it also includes the flagship models that have the higher performance graphics card whatsoever.
This processor supports the Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz for all the active cores it works on.
The NVidia GeForce GTX 960M does decent work on this laptop. It is kind of a sad thing to see laptops under $1000 max out onto GTX 960M but there is nothing that can be done about that. Overall it is a good-quality graphics card.
This laptop comes with 2 DDR4 SODIMM modules that are equipped with 16GB of RAM, but the system can be upgraded up to 32 GB with ease.
Things that I liked
- The laptop comes with a clear display that will benefit the vast majority gamers for all kind of purposes. Although it’s a TN panel screen, it still tends to produce clear and sharp image.
- The combination of components that are equipped in this laptop do good job in outperforming its prior versions and allowing gamers to play high-end, demanding games.
- The case of the laptop is of extremely good quality. The laptop didn’t crack or creek, not even after the applied force.
- The laptop’s keyboard and touch bar are very good. The keyboard possesses very responsive and comfortable keys that are highly customizable while the touch bar is very responsive and allows multi clicks.
Things that I didn’t like
- This laptop doesn’t have any significant flaws that could deeply affect its performance.
- It being thicker, and a bit more chunky will result in having more trouble finding the suitable bag that will carry it around on the LAN parties, or generally during the traveling.
- Unfortunately the keyboard and touch bar don’t have backlights.
Reason for our recommendation

Things that I Liked
- Battery Life is most impressive. Knowing that most of the gaming laptops can’t handle more than 3-4 hours of use. I was surprised to see that this laptop can last more than 5 hours.
- It offers sleek and slick design. It is quite lightweight.
Things that I didn’t like
- The display is pretty DIM, that can get very annoying over time.
- Unfortunately, slow-speed transfers can be a real downfall to this laptop
- The graphics card NVidia GTX 940MX is pretty low graphics card compared to the competition in this line. I’d be satisfied to see GTX 950M at least, as 940MX probably isn’t capable of running all the high games, especially on high settings.

HP Pavilon 15 is a laptop that can benefit the ones with the lowest budget. If currently you can’t allow, or settle yourself with a laptop that prices over $800, this laptop is perfect for you
