Mainly because the budget solid components in an efficient laptop can hardly be bought for less than $1000.

This is mainly because the gaming laptops rely on graphics card chips with the dedicated memory. As such, the graphics card that can fit the price range between $500 and $600 are either impossible to buy, or are enough outdated that even the integrated chips within the CPU can outperform them.

#1. Lenovo Ideapad 510 – 15.6″ FHD Laptop

It is white, and quite more appealing to the female generation of gamers than you’d think.

And while it is ideal for low-end gaming, there would be nothing wrong, if it was used for other activities such as video editing, game development, and business, thanks to its’ gorgeous looking, mesmerizing design.

Lenovo even managed to build the dedicated graphics card, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 940MX, which while it doesn’t perform outstandingly works just enough to present the user with some minimalist games that came out in the recent years.

Design

When it comes to the design, as expected we are greeted by Lenovo’s mainly plastic build, except for the upper side where the logo is located. That side is covered in aluminum. All in all, it looks lovely, and you can choose between the white and black model, although I have to admit that the white one looks extremely attractive, and ideal for the female gamers who want to make their appearance with a powerful, yet feminine oriented gaming machine.

When we open the model, we see the silver lining covering the laptop. The bezels of the display shine in silver color which looks very attractive and innovative. Needless to say, the 15.6 inch display seems large enough and covers the sufficient space. It doesn’t hurt to mention that the whole surface successfully ignores and resists the fingerprints, making the IdeaPad very clean looking and not to mention elegant.

The twisting and opening of the laptop doesn’t require too much of effort, and it is very quiet in the process. The case has an average quality, but sufficient to be durable until you decide that the right time has come to change the laptop.

Aesthetics are that the 15.6 inches IdeaPad 510 is extremely slim, thin, and more importantly light. You don’t want to find yourself in the exhausting trips carrying a bulky laptop. No, the IdeaPad 510 is nothing like that. The competition from the list, such as Acer is relatively harder, weighing 200 grams more than the first choice of ours. All in all, we have focused on either aesthetic, next to the build quality, performance, and the visuals.

The connectivity is in great matter limited, as a result of the slim build. In fact, the vast majority of portable laptops lacks on the connectivity options. There’s an Ethernet port, two USB 3,0 ports and one of the older standards of 2.0. There is even an optical drive but, given the storage newer games take, the CDs and the DVDs will not be necessarily used too much.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Keyboard and touchpad quality are extremely important. However, not so much on a gaming laptop. Unfortunately, the budget laptops don’t dedicate too much attention to these two input devices. The IdeaPad 510 features a chiclet style black keyboard, with keys far smaller than the regular keyboards on either mechanical pads but also other laptops. With this lack, the people with larger fingers will interfere some kind of problems when trying to type fast, and will actually be prone to making typing errors.

The keys are flat and rubberized in order for the user to quickly get used to the keyboard style, and yield great typing results. A medium sized person who likes to type a lot will not have problems meeting the maximum possible speed for typing.

In conclusion, it is a very comfortable keyboard, with deep traveling time and not too loud for the user. You can rest assured that if you like to type a lot, you will not have a problem doing that on even more quiet places, as the pace of the keyboard is very calm and silent. However, the rougher touch can yield different results, making a noticeable noise.

There is enough of room on the laptop to rest your hands while you type, but I am surprised that they didn’t use this space to create a better touchpad, because it is very small. Although it is very sensitive, and responsive, the edges of it seem to take the less of response and precision which is the case with the very mid. The other thing we minded is that the surface of the touchpad appears to be very rough, and it is supposed to be smooth enough so the fingers can slip through. When it comes to some fast gestures, the fingers stumble, which creates an uncomfortable feeling for the hand, this being said, touchpad needs to be more smooth.

Luckily, the mouse cursor elements were much better than the rest of the touchpad. They have an extremely smooth and accurate response to the clicks, without being too loud. Inside an Elan driver menu, you can control the multi touch gestures up to four fingers, which is completely acceptable.

The mouse replacement keys have a very audible response, but not loud enough to interrupt you. It runs smoothly, without the certain pressure while clicking. There is only a complaint about the touchpad’s size in general, but then again, if you are buying a laptop to play entirely game, I wouldn’t waste time testing the touchpad in terms of gaming capabilities. There are various gaming mice at an affordable price.

Display

Even the laptops ranged barely under $1000 intercept the troubles with the display. The laptops that we have reviewed in our last article such as HP Pavilion 15, and the Lenovo Legion Y520 have a very dim display, which is meaningless unless the brightness and saturation are set on 100%. The similar, if not even worse scenario is played with the sub-$600 gaming laptops.

Surprisingly for the budget, Lenovo decided to set a finish matte display, a full HD screen with the IPS panel. This is extremely good for use outside, because the IPS panel prevents the reflection, and provides a genuine picture despite the position you are in. Additionally, the 178 degrees viewing angles are superb to the competitive TN panels, that despite its’ quality are estimated to disappear from the use, thanks to the poor viewing angles. The pixel density is of 141 PPI thanks to the 2 million pixels which overly distribute from the 15.6 inches display. This results in a sufficiently sharp display, regardless to the position of the user.

One of the worrying elements are also rooms with the more natural, and general lighting. The 308 cd/ m² brightness. However, the drawback is the 80% level of the illumination.

As for the rest, the presented colors were enough vivid for the evoking of the gaming experience. It won’t present the perfect picture. But you can expect the decent amount of crystal clear picture with the vibrant textures which bring the life to the textures.

It is a great advantage that they moved on from the under-ranged TN panel to the IPS panel, but the rest of the display with the supported 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution didn’t stand any higher than the average.

Audio

Thanks to this model, we can see why did Lenovo implement the ultimate speaker enhancement, because the lower-end laptops have terribly disaster of an audio performance. We have performed the regular tests on this model, which included the video clips from YouTube and that was enough for us to see that the audio is nowhere near special.

The mids are ok. The sound is not perfect, but it doesn’t sound unnatural either. However, it lacks that crispy and detail element that every laptop speakers should have. Despite the price tag, and the fact it is a gaming laptop, every laptop needs to deliver at least the hearable amount of the sound.

The bass is not even worth the mention, especially because we barely heard or felt it. Occasionally there would be a dynamic element heard while listening to the music. However, nothing to significantly better. If you are ok with the low volume of sounds, then the speakers will suffice. However, if you are a hardcore gamer who is looking for a way to bring the music from the games to life, and encourage yourself to yield better gaming results, you should sport for a good-quality of gaming headphones, because the speakers will not help you achieve that. Eventually as you increase the volume, you will be greeted with more distortion and latency than when the volume was lower.

Sporting for a pair of good-quality gaming headphones is essential in this case, as it will give you an insight into a more detailed sound and help you cope with the demanding game experiences.

Heating and Temperature

Before we get to the part with the temperatures, it is important to take a grip of the noise chapter. No laptop is perfect, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 510 is no exception. While it won’t provide an extraordinary noise in the normal use, you can still hear a subtle noise along the ambient noise.

As soon as some program is started, the laptop will start to get louder, but not just yet to the point that you’ll get worried, but there’s no need to be spooked, as with time, you will get used to this.

When it comes to the games, there will be an enormous increment in the noise factor however, not too problematic, as this is something that you can get adapted to in the first place. When you are standing at a distance from laptop, you will hardly make the difference between the laptop noise and the ambient sound. It is understandable that in the gaming, noise is much more increased, and thereby the poor speakers cannot help you eliminate that humming. Even though we have mentioned before, a pair of headphones will greatly come in handy.

Now to get to the right point, the temperatures and heat. The heating system is enough good to not cause any tremendous temperature during the laptop’s idle state. Even during the higher outside temperatures, the laptop shouldn’t estimate higher than 30 degrees in the normal state, or a regular internet surfing.

However, the temperature increases during the more demanding tasks, such as 3D games, and multithreading. The capabilities of the graphics card fit the budget just right but, when it comes to the cooling system, the Lenovo 510 kept the optimal temperatures and the fair level of cooling comparing to the competition despite the super slim design which usually brings forth the biggest enemy of gaming beside the low FPS, the temperature overheating.

Battery Life

Given with the small 30-Wh battery, we weren’t hoping for anything more than the below average to an average battery life. Compared to the Acer’s laptop, and the Pavilion laptop, the Lenovo fell behind. Depending on the use, the Lenovo IdeaPad 510 didn’t survive for longer than 3.5 hours. When it was exposed to the more demanding tasks, it survived even less, ranging between two and three hours respectively.

Performance

We have taken the whole configuration on our mind, which is why we have opted for the Lenovo over Acer’s low-end laptop, even though the both laptops have considerably same capabilities, the appearance of the GeForce GTX 940MX over the 940M model has crucially given the battle in Lenovo’s favor, despite the better quality of screen and battery life found in the Acer Aspire 15 laptop.

The Intel Core i5-6200U Skylake processor is largely used in nearly all budget laptops, which is sufficient, but nowhere near the HQ processors, which strictly cover the mid-ranged gaming capabilities, especially with the release of the Kabylake, 7^th generation.

However, this mediocre processor is suitable to either larger and smaller cases and very adjustable. Moreover, it is sufficient for the medium demanding gaming performance, and programs such as CAD, Photoshop, Illustrator and much more. The Turbo limit is 2.7 GHz with the both cores unparked, but the performance is still steady. The processor is still accompanied with the 8GB of DDR4 RAM which is more than enough for multitasking on laptop as well as the most games for the newer generation.

The lack of SSD greatly slowed down the laptop’s performance, whereas we have the 1 TB of storage but, with the slow storage option of 5400 RPM. If you have patience, and nerves of steel for the time when system slows down and starts booting slowly, it will be sufficient for the most of the use.

The graphics card is, as mentioned above GTX 940MX, and while it cannot match the tremendous performance of the 10 series graphics card, you will find its’ performance comforting as it can run the games such as Battlefield 4 and even The Middle Earth: Shadow of the Mordor on acceptable graphics performance and resolution. When you put these puzzling pieces together, you will figure out that the games you can play are in great number outperforming those that you can’t play, even on the lowest settings. You for sure are missing the fun of the VR ready graphics card, yet the IdeaPad 510 is eligible for the basic gaming performance which fits the wallet.

The things that we didn’t like

We can’t mind the screen response times, and the below average speaker’s quality. Mainly because this is expected and average on laptops with this price tag. However, there are several other things that we would like to point out, which drawback this laptop from the good quality.

The first thing that I would like to mention is the lack of SSD. I’m sure that including even a 128 GB solid state drive would not affect the pricetag too much. Moreover, installing the system on it would establish a firmer ground for the sturdy programs dedicated to the rendering and long-lasting loading times. This also doesn’t accompany the extremely slow and unreliable mechanical hard disc thanks to its’ 5400 RPM speed. The booting times can take extremely much, which is unattractive even to the laptops in this range.

The other thing that I would like to point out is an extremely low lasting battery life. If you were to take a trip to the library for the finals preparation, your laptop would let you down within three hours. Although the poor battery life is expected from a gaming laptop, no matter the price, it is always disappointing to see a laptop die out too soon. Decreasing the brightness of a laptop would contribute to a longer battery life, though I do not recommend that, because the display is kind of a dim.

Reason for Recommending

There are a lot of things to put to consideration a silent and comfortable keyboard, slimness and portability, quietly running system, and a set of components that make it run smoothly to the point where you don’t have to worry about the random crashes and the framerate drops. Its’ lovely design makes it eligible even for other purpose, hence we can say that the Ideapad 510 is a very versatile laptop.

Summary

Lenovo IdeaPad 510 is the best gaming laptop under $600 with our opinion. Of course, there are a lot of mediocre things that it consists of, like the display, touchpad, speakers, slow hard drive, and a below average battery life. However, we cannot help but admire its’ attractive and futuristic design, solid gaming and multitasking performance. If you are looking for a decent gaming laptop for less than $600, you are making no mistake in springing for the IdeaPad 510.

The Runners Up

We had a hard time compiling the rest of the list, mainly because of the lack of graphics chips that would be supported in these gaming laptops. However, we did our best to choose based on the cooling systems, quality of the display, and solid processor performance. There is no reason to spend more than $1000 on a laptop if the selection of the games you’re playing is much under the performance of the flagship models. These laptops lack the ”look at me” aesthetics that is recognizable wherever you go with them, but keep the classy and pristine looking appearance, and provide the decent level of performance.

#2. Acer Aspire E5-573G 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop

It has the similar aesthetics to the IdeaPad 510. The case is made out of plastic, except for the Acer logo which is etched at the upper side of the case.

The plastic build looks pristine and mimics the original brushed aluminum gaming laptops. It is belonging to a series of very thin and slim laptops. However, it doesn’t earn the title of portable thanks to its’ chunkier weight.

The 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display on a 15.6 inches display offers a nice selection of colors and a wide enough viewing angles as much as the more of a predicting display. More importantly, all the Acer Aspire gaming laptops offer a protection from the blue color emitting, which causes the headache and tires the eyes.

More importantly, it is important to mention the battery life which lasts between 6 and 7 hours, and a powerful and comfortable keyboard. It lacks the backlights which is very disappointing, because the backlit keyboard makes it easier on people who have to type in the dark.

More importantly it has a flimsy touchpad which feels more rougher than smooth on the first touch.

The laptop sports a 2.2 GHz Core i5-5200U CPU accompanied with 8 GB of RAM. The graphics performance is sufficient thanks to the 940M graphics card with the 2 GB of dedicated memory. The storage though, just like our first option lacks the SSD and the original hard drive lacks on the RPM speed.

If you are looking for a hardcore gaming laptop that will provide an efficient performance for the most of your tasks, there is no better option than the Acer Aspire E5-573. Despite the IdeaPad sporting minimally stronger graphics card, the Acer Aspire comes with the admirable battery life, wonderful glossy display, and great multimedia and productivity capabilities

Summary

Acer Aspire E5 is an entry-level gaming laptop that surpasses much further with its’ performance than its’ price suggests. If you can cope with the lack of the Bluetooth, rough touchpad, and a lack of faster storage, it will be a great option for all students, programmers, and more importantly gamers.

#3. ASUS F556UA-AB54 NB 15.6″ FHD (Gold)

It doesn’t win any ultimate rewards for the impeccable performance but, it does provide a genuine performance thanks to the i5 Kabylake processor and 8 GB of RAM, which are extendable to 12 GB.

The laptop is colored in gold, and has fine accents so that it resembles of the brushed aluminum. It has a very deep and comfortable keyboard, a long with the smooth and responsive touchpad. The FHD display supports up to 1920 x 1080 resolution and offers a nice sharpness and the color transparency.

When it comes to the gaming performance, there is an Intel HD 620 graphics card with the shared memory. It won’t run the most demanding games.

However, we found playing GTA V on low settings playable. This laptop is also ideal for the games such as The Sims, Starcraft, Dota 2, and League of Legends. For the storage there is 256 GB of solid state drive with the fast transfer and accessing speed.

However, we found the lack of the 1 TB hard drive disappointing. The last but not the least thing is that the Asus F556UA has an implemented non-removable battery with the impressive life of 5 hours and 29 minutes.

Reason for Recommending

Asus F556UA is recommended mostly for its’ beautiful design, but also great productivity capabilities next to the above average gaming performance. Its shared graphics limits it a lot when it comes to the gaming performance.
