#1. Alienware AAW17R4-7002SLV-PUS 17″ Laptop with NVIDIA GTX 1060

[amazon_link asins=’B01MYXG6J1′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’a92caee8-10a7-11e7-9aaf-4ba579dc5ec0′]No laptop can get more premium than Alienware. Dell wanted to present us with completely refreshed style, releasing models that feel like only royalty can have them. Just like its predecessor, R3, and other Alienware laptops, regardless of size and configuration, the Alienware 17 R4 feels like a mere reflection from the most futuristic, sci-fi movies. At first glance, you will think that the laptop came from an alternate reality, parallel universe or other planet.

Considering that it is 17 inches big, you will assume that you will not drag it around the house too much, neither through the public transport, park or library. While it is capable of ensuring the desktop-class gameplay, it will not be the most portable companion. It is quite heavy, and not eligible for fitting in the ordinary messenger bags, backpacks or at the classes. If you want to travel from a room to a room, then you will not risk breaking your back.

Then why is this the best laptop? It has an outstanding performance benchmarks. Not only it is better than the vast majority of laptops in the class, but also durable enough to persist for years delivering nothing but absolutely thrilling game experience with immense framerates and predictable display that will allow you to get ahead of your in-game opponents. It is equipped with the Core i7-6820HK that is overclockable. You can choose between the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. Our review sample springs for the mobile version of the GTX 1070 but that doesn’t mean that you cannot opt for the other, more flagship model.

Needless to say, the laptop is fully VR functional, allowing its users to dive into completely new gaming experience, enriched with the VR, augmented intelligence, all they need is an operating Ocolus Rift or HTC Vive headset, and they are ready to experience completely new VR framerates.

The R4 has everything a professional or a gaming enthusiast with a good-standing pocket is looking for. And in order not to spoil everything for you, I will allow you to continue reading and see what is this premium machine made of.

Design

Alienware is rebuilding the build and style of its laptop, and the change is significantly present with the R4 model. Their aim is centered towards thinner designs compared to the competition. Even though this model is 17.3 inches large, it is still relatively thin which addons to its premium appearance. Dell has definitely taken dramatic step towards the slim trend.

The slim design was achieved thanks to the revamp of the thermal system the laptops usually had. The cooling system has been completely changed but, there will be more about that later. The only thing that we will add now is that the heatsinks are no longer under the keyboard but, pushed towards the rear of the laptop, making this completely different compared to other machines that are available on the market.

This new system has also a name, or how Alienware calls it, the ‘ Hinge Forward ‘ design. I must admit that this is really innovative. They want to make the slimmest laptops available on the market, and they are succeeding, along with the classic released by Dell- Adamo, and the HP Spectre that is considered an ultra-portable machine.

The rounded corners that immensely grabbed its popularity back in the 2013, when we first took crisp of these beasts from the other planet, are thing of past. Every rounded shape has been replaced with a more sharp design, which is unusual for Alienware’s policy. There is no doubt that the Alienware is establishing a new figure in the world of gaming laptops.

The upper part of this 17 inch beast is extremely thin, compared to its predecessors. It is covered in one layer of metal along with an optical stack for the display. The sides are not chunky, but strong enough only to hold what components this laptop has inside of itself. In the competition, this is probably the thinnest notebook in the range of 17 inchers.

This leads to some unexpected issues in terms of gaming. A longer front from the laptop resulted in a chunky build and needing to spring for a larger bag than for average laptop bags for 17 inchers. This chunky machine might be too front end compared to the other laptops and hence meet troubles fitting in your already existing bag.

Being very slim and sleek at 1.8 inches thickness, this 17.3 inches machine weights at around 10 pounds. Which is why the laptop is not eligible for chunky carrying around, unless you’re already in the house. The Alienware sign that is etched on the upper case has also been revamped to be more sinister, and more gaming-friendly, making it fit perfectly in the silver, premium chassis.

Display

Display was built to impress even the most demanding gamers, and people who in general judge every color and every pixel. The 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution feels more than welcoming and warm to spring on this laptop, along with full HD 300 nits of colors, placed on a finish-matte IPS display. Joined with the latest choices of GPU chips GTX 1060, 1070 and 1080, they will take a huge advantage in running even the most demanding today’s titles with nothing less than a desktop-class, gaming experience.

For all the G-Sync enthusiasts, there is the QHD 2560 x 1440 resolution option with a TN 400 nits panel, that will suffice for gaming, of course if you can settle for the slightly worse contrast and poorer color vibrancy which is followed with not too ranged viewing angles.

If you’re far more demanding than that, there is a 4K option as well, implemented with the vivid Sharp IGZO panel, which offers higher color accuracy, and color. The laptop can aside from gaming be versatile enough for the photo and video editors who enjoy the vibrant display with high color range. What is the best is that all displays have a finish-matte and are not eligible for touch-screen, which is typical for gaming laptops, regardless of the price. However, knowing Alienware, I wouldn’t be surprised if I woke up to seeing a series of laptops that are greeting the gloss touch panel.

For the purpose of this review, we decided to stick with the latest IPS paneled display, which is excellent and contained in the vast majority of high end gaming laptops, mainly because it is expected from them to convey a gloss image, full of detailed textures that are vivid and vibrant. For the professional photo and video editors, the IPS panel can be good after performing a calibration. If we want to present that in numbers, the display’s panel contains 95% of sRGB and 72% of Adobe RGB. This ratio is almost the same for the Alienware 15 R3 which we have already reviewed in our prior articles, which contains the same IPS panel, but with 1080p display. The levels of black color are 0.51 when the brightness is put on max. The ratio is respectful but not irreplaceable with its 660:1 contrast.

The hardware white point, which contains 6900K is decent for laptops that are meant to exceed and go above this ideal point. However, the 2.0 gamma points is lower than the average, where the 2.2 is ideal. Don’t fret, this is easily fixed with the calibration.

All in all, no matter what you opt for, you will get a crystal clear, sharp display that minimizes all the stuttering and framerate falling. It feels premium, just like the rest of the laptop because it is capable of realizing the pixelated content in the games, and give the user the feel as if he is really experiencing the game.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Needless to say, we had high expectations of this laptop’s keyboard, and as a result, the Dell’s Alienware 17 didn’t let us down. When we opened the laptop and saw the LED lights backlit keyboard, we knew that it was definitely designed for the strictest of the gamers. You can choose between the purple and orange keyboard, depends on configuration you have gone after. The blue backlights have given a true gaming ambient to the laptop, especially when your favorite games are being pursued from the dark, in the late night, next to the soda and chips.

The TactX keyboard is now upgraded with the n-key rollover, which sounds like a great news to all Alienware laptop series lovers. It enables the 108-key commands, so that the user can be extra productive, and operate with multi-threads within the minute. The spacing between keys is very nice and respectful, while the 2.2mm of key travel suffice a deep and silent keyboard eligible for both long typing processes and exhausting times of gaming. Not to mention the numeric pad, but let’s say that was obvious considering the large laptop we’re dealing with.

The touchpad looks highly innovative. It is available in orange and purple color and I admit that as a female, I found the purple color highly convincing and appealing. It sort of adds the female attraction in the gaming world but, that doesn’t mean that guys can’t use it. Its sleek design and slippery structure felt amazing when navigating the multi touching features of it, allowing me to access everything I wanted and made scrolling easy as if it was performed with the most accurate mouse.

Naturally, for more demanding games, you will probably rely on mouse because, honestly, I wouldn’t even play The Sims with the touchpad. Nevermind, the touchpad feels very innovative and attractive to look as a decoration detail on the laptop. Because I believe that the most of the people will rely on the mouse in their gaming endeavors. The touchpad still had great accuracy and accessing time. The commands I performed on it have instantly opened in the computer. So, for basic actions and business, it performed more than well.

Speakers

On our audio tests, the Alienware 17 R4 performed more than sufficiently. The sound output was detailed, warm and with crisp, while the bass feels powerful as well. This all is a result of another feature that came with the upgraded design Alienware features with the newer models. The laptop packs a more effective, intuitive speaker box, which highly enhances the overall quality of audio output, with clear sound in mind.

This setup will not only make watching movies and streaming videos dramatic, but also improve the overall gameplay experience for you, making you forget the headphone and give into the dramatic sounds and resonating with the in-game experience and world.

Heating and Noise

The Alienware has definitely decided to step up their game and create a laptop that will not overheat and thus kill the fun of all the gamers who are settling for nothing less than the most demanding games on far higher framerates than it would be expected.

This model has improved thermal settings, allowing you to absolutely relax and play your games on laptop not running hot. They have revamped the vents, like we have mentioned. Also, the fact that this laptop is quite larger compared to its 13 inch and 14 inch companion means that there is a lot more space in it to channel and circulate hot air and dust.

The Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ runs at around 62 degrees and so does the graphics card, even with the 1080p resolution when gaming, with activated V-sync and ultra-settings. These are amazing temperatures even for the gaming laptops, and we knew that Dell had something amazing in its mind.

Even the largest desktop, with perfectly defined cooling couldn’t beat this great relation of temperatures.

About the noise, the Alienware runs very quiet. I was happy to hear the sound of mere silence while gaming. But, even if I didn’t, the crispy speakers with great quality would make up for the noisy fans, that there are none.

Battery Life

When you are pursuing a laptop with such large and powerful batteries, you can’t expect the battery life that can last a whole day, like it is the case with Chromebooks or MacBooks. This being said, our tests have shown that battery is capable of surviving for four hours when being exposed to unstoppable web surfing and video streaming.

There are not many laptops that are in the competition for the battery. But, if somehow you manage to lift the laptop and take it to the LAN party, make sure that there is a free power socket at your friend’s place.

Performance

When you open the laptop, you will be greeted with nothing but the latest components that make its configuration. The Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ, quad-core processor that reaches up to 3.8 GHz in its turbo mode will ensure that the laptop is more than capable of overcoming the obstacles of multiple operations. Along, with the 16 GB of DDR4 RAM which consists of 2x 8 GB cards. These are easily expendable to up to 32 GB which is more than enough to support the latest generation games. For Storage, there is the 1 TB mechanical hard-drive with 7200 RPM SATA. The laptop lacks the SSD drive, but if you want to spend more, you will get one with 256 GB.

When it comes to the graphics card, The system sports the latest generation 16nm Pascal Architecture, 10 series Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070M graphics card. It is absolutely VR friendly, and tested with the Ocolus Rift and HTC Vive. It will allow you to experience the gaming experience that has been unknown to you until now. Even the most demanding games crumble before it, as it completely replaces the desktop level GTX 1070, and ensures the gaming on top class.

Things that I didn’t Like

  • The lack of SSD is a minor drawback but, definitely not a deal breaker. SSDs are getting more and more popular and it is a matter of time when their prices will completely drop. SSDs with operating systems installed on it, allow you to start your laptop within 15 seconds or even less. Not to mention their large accessing, writing and transfer speeds.
  • I cannot call the battery life bad, it is more of a milding one. The 17 inch laptop with such configuration generates a lot of power and it is actually surprising to see a laptop survive more than 3 hours. Even so, I hope that the battery life will be enhanced even on larger laptops.

Reason for Recommending

If you are a gamer, this laptop is a must have. For less than $2000 you will be getting a laptop that will be able of withstanding technology’s rapid growth and moving forward for many years. The laptop is equipped with the latest generation components and it is easily upgradable. It has plenty of RAM, storage and graphics capacity to bring today’s and even tomorrow games on knees.

Summary

In our testing and reviewing, we have had a lot of fun exploring the newest laptop configurations and testing them with the newest games such as Witcher III, Far Cry, Battlefield 1 and much more. Alienware stepped forward in their gaming laptops series and made a VR capable machine that causes awe and admiration. If you are looking for a gaming experience with the attitude. Alienware 17 is definitely for you.

  • The excellent setup of configurations that compliment this laptop are more than sufficient for good quality gaming.
  • It looks so premium, that it would be hard to tell that this is a gaming laptop of the budget range.

Things that I didn’t like

  • The TN paneled display produces poor viewing angles, and lower contrast compared to other laptops. However, you can easily swap this for the IPS panel for great viewing angles and high color vibrancy and accuracy.
  • Touch pad is a bit slow and unresponsive. But, what true gamer has ever used touch pad for gaming?

Reason for Recommending

If you can’t afford a powerful and expensive laptop, Dell Inspiron 15 is the best choice for you. Even though it is not, it looks extremely premium, attractive and it ensures near desktop class gaming thanks to the GTX 1050.

Summary

  • The backlit keyboard is comfortable, deep and silent. Not to ensure that it has popular backlights.

Things that I didn’t like

  • It is too pricey for a gaming laptop.
  • It has a slow and unresponsive touchpad.

Reason for Recommending

If you are looking for a budget laptop, Asus ROG GL753 still seems like a good opportunity for those who cannot afford the finest laptops. It is definitely recommended for college students and gamers that are less strict about that profession.

Summary

Despite its drawbacks, and a bit more demanding price for the mid-ranged laptop, Asus ROG GL753 has everything an average laptop user  would be looking for. Just like every laptop, it is backed up with some minor drawbacks, but overall. It runs nearly every game on high and ultra settings with reasonable framerates. It has an ok but, not perfect battery life. All in all, a perfect laptop for apprentice gamers who want to make remarkable appearance on games cons, LAN parties and much more gamers held events in the world.

Because it is suitable for either business suite, design, editing and gaming. It is extremely slim and thin, and very easy to fit in the backpacks. It looks and feels very premium on touch. The system is equipped with the 7th generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ Quad Core processor. It will easily extend up to 3.5 GHz, when it is exposed to the rapid operations that exchange between themselves.

It has 8GB of RAM which suffices all parties that use it. The most lovely part of this laptop is the budget 10 series GTX 1050 graphics card that in combination with a 4K Ultra HD display with resolution 3840 x 2160 pixels display with touch features gives a mean punch to the competition. The laptop stores 256 GB solid state drive and has a preinstalled Windows 10 Home.

Things that I liked

  • The 4K display looks absolutely wonderful, every detail is expressed and the colors are either accurate and powerful.
  • Decently solid and swift performance.
  • Great Battery Life

Things that I didn’t like

  • The webcam is extremely low. I wish that Dell put a bit more work in utilizing a more powerful camera.
  • The Keyboard travel time is not that great

Reason for Recommending

The XPS 15 is recommended for everyone who likes their laptop to do more things like that, especially when it comes to video editing. The laptop is productive and capable of rendering the 4K videos but also running almost every demanding game the technology standards have set.

Summary

Dell XPS 15 is a combination of many good things and a few bad ones. However, the good stuff outdoes the bad stuff, making this laptop one of the better for this year. Many would not recommend it for gaming. But, knowing that even photo and video editors are fond of gaming and they spend a lot of money on equipment, this is a perfect win-win situation.

Things that I didn’t like

  • It is quite heavy, but like you see with the previous models, so are other 17 inch laptops.
  • And has a poor cooling system, considering it runs hot. It is a bit disappointing to see that such a large laptop has a problem with heat. However, this is where the cooling pads jump in and save the day. Unless you are into less demanding games, you can interpret some troubles with heating problem.
  • The battery isn’t too bad, but neither is too good. It has a milding battery life, but that issues is expected with the 17 inch laptops.
