Why Should You Trust Us and How Did We Pick the Best Gaming Laptop Brands of 2018?
We have spent years in the gaming branch. Starting from the powerful desktop models, years back, it was hard for us to believe that the concept of mobile gaming will ever come into life. With the release of the 10-series GeForce GTX graphics cards, which are based on 16-nm Pascal’s architecture, the gaming laptops have already been able to provide the value of the desktop, and ensure that the user was experiencing the desktop-class of gaming.
This being said, we have reviewed many different laptops, from the different ranging, in both terms of budget and performance. We have followed the news about the most innovative technologies implemented in the newer models over years, which helped us gain the necessary experience in reviewing, and that helped us understand the process of exponential growth of technology through the years.
On our site, you can find great variety of models and brands that compliment our buying-guides and reviews, and we have reviewed every of them, thanks to the thorough testing and methodical internet research, as well as the careful visiting to the large computer equipment stores and communicating with the manufacturer.
Just like before, we decided to implement the same methods now. We believe that every brand stands out from the crowd thanks to something special. Whether is it the advanced detail of the audio, great accuracy of the display, or the capability of the laptop to stay cool and not overheat, it has helped the certain laptop brand grow their name and successfully defeat the competition through the years.
Naturally, not every brand is perfect, as every innovative feature that can boost the overall experience of using has sacrificed something else in order for something else to work. This is why every laptop has some benefits, and on the other side, drawbacks that can make it unappealing and unattractive.
Top 4 Best Gaming Laptops Brands of 2018
After careful reviewing we have found that the Lenovo is the best gaming laptop brand. The 2018 has been revolutionary for Lenovo in both gaming and other purposes. At the beginning of the year, the Lenovo has announced the releasing of its’ Legion gaming series. In continuing of this article, you can find out more about our personal best- Lenovo.
#1. Lenovo Gaming Laptops – The Best Gaming Laptop Brand 2018
Lenovo is our personal best among the best gaming laptop brands. While every brand comes with a lot of flaws, and absolutely none can be considered the best, according to our thorough research and testing we found that Lenovo promises a lot of revolutionary changes that mainly improved the experience of usage, not only in gaming, but also in general use.
Over the years of catastrophically poor customer support, and the slow laptop models full of bloatware, Lenovo decided to step up their game and increase the quality of their support, while building the unbreakable reputation. The affordability, innovation, long battery lives, and enhanced quality of audio and keyboards were all the reasons why we chose Lenovo as the best gaming laptop brand.
The Lenovo is famous for its’ ThinkPad, Yoga, and general Y series that served for gaming. The ThinkPad and Yoga were far more popular for the advanced level of keyboards, portability, and the battery life that can last up over 10 hours which is far beyond any laptop that is not a Chromebook or a Mac. The gaming series weren’t so popular, but with 2018 the Legion series came, laptop series that is inspired after the great Roman legates. They are absolutely perfect in every sense of usage, and are the first gaming laptops that feature the Dolby audio setting. While the gaming specifications are modest and not moving above the GTX 1060, the laptops are completely capable of bringing gaming to the first class levels, and ensuring the high-end gaming experience without spending $3000 on a gaming laptop or more.
Why opt for Lenovo?
Lovely and stylish design is what always made Lenovo step out from the sea of the ordinary. Even though most models are mainly plastic, the quality of the plastic is unquestioned. Despite that, there have always been the successful and stunning looking mimics of the brushed aluminum.
Also, Lenovo has been known for their flat and futuristic looking keyboards that give a near perfect typing feedback despite being flat. On the other side, the gaming keyboards have always given the decent travel time and nice spacing for the accurate level of gaming.
We have mainly seen the single hinge, but there were some laptop models that appeared with the dual hinge system. More appealing fact is the 360-degree bending hinges seen on the Yoga 2 in 1 series, and the unparalleled ergonomics look and feel amazing, mainly because you can fold your laptop, but also carry it wherever you need to go and get the work done. With all of this in mind Lenovo offers a lot of design-like features. Lenovo’s Legion gaming series looks trendy too, featuring relatively thinner design compared to the previous years, offering a more aggressive and bold look, but not as attaching and attention-grabbing like Asus does.
The support of Lenovo has improved over the several years. However, we still intercept some irregularities and problems when receiving the information. All in all, the waiting times have been vastly reduced, while the customer service has very pleasant tone of voice and gives the necessary guidance when the problems with the system occurs. Also, when the part is broken, the support urgently reacts to have that part replaced in a timely manner.
Why not opt for Lenovo?
If you are looking for the most pristine design, top-notch class of gaming, and larger in size, then Lenovo might not be your first choice. Gamers who are seeking the premium level of gaming experience should search the answers in Asus, MSI, or HP gaming laptops instead Lenovo, as the highest graphics card they support as of now is Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060M. But, even so, the laptop is eligible for the VR and provides a respectful amount of detail and the essential framerate for gaming.
Another reason that could drag you away from Lenovo is the amount of the pre-installed programs also known as bloatware. Those programs mainly take over the storage and don’t serve the best of their purpose. However, it is important to note the fact that the Legion series have greatly improved the preinstalled software and offer useful programs that help get the best out of audio, gaming experience, and keyboard.
Lenovo Y520 (The i5 version)
[amazon_link asins=’B06WVMJ713′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’a4abda3a-4cca-11e7-8532-3fa7622c129d’]If you’ve already read our reviews in the past, you will figure that we have already talked about both Legion Y520 and Y720.
However, this version enables the dedicated gamers to spend even less money compared to the version with the Core i7.
Lenovo Legion Y520 looks very powerful and attractive, and sounds premium as well thanks to the 2x Harman speakers with Dolby Audio premium.
There is an aggressive, sinister red backlit keyboard for the more bold gaming experience. The Legion Y520 is equipped with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB of the dedicated memory, the 7th generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ, and 16 GB of RAM. For storage there is the budget 1 TB, 5400 RPM SATA drive.
It is also important to note that the Y520 is portable and lightweight thanks to the 2.5 kg mass.
The things that we liked
- Innovative design
- Powerful Audio
- Enhanced gaming and productivity experience
The things that we didn’t like
- Strange touchpad
- Dim display
Reason for Recommending
For our winning laptop brand, we only have the words of praise. So, if you decide to spring for the Legion Y520, you decide to spring for the emotion evoking audio, comfortable keyboard and near perfect budget gaming experience. More importantly, you will have an attractive gaming themed laptop, without a too aggressive look.
Summary
Lenovo Legion Y520 will offer more than sufficient level of gaming and productivity for every dedicated gamer. Perhaps, its’ display is slightly darker, and the touchpad leads to the occasional typos, you shouldn’t get spooked. The Lenovo Y520 will let you enjoy your favorite games on respectful framerates.
#2. Asus Gaming Laptops
Asus took the second place in the best gaming laptop brand contest. In our last article, we talked about the best Asus gaming laptops and what all they consist of.
The Asus is well known for their ROG (Republic of Gamers) series, Zen Book series, and absolutely unparalleled Chromebooks that are the firsts of that kind to run Android applications. Asus puts a lot of effort in their aggressive gaming design and the RGB and sinister red gaming keyboards.
There are many key strengths that Asus possesses, but we have explained them mainly in our last article that you can read here[we can put internal link]. However, it doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves of it slightly.
Why opt for Asus?
Asus has released the wonderful looking laptops. Starting from the ultra-portable Chromebooks and Zenbooks to the bulkier ROG laptops. Asus has always exceeded from our expectations and managed to make premium and pristine feeling gaming laptops whether are they made of the brushed Aluminum or not. Another thing important to note are the RGB gaming keyboards designed with the optimal depth which ensures the quality gaming experience.
Cooling system of Asus are rarely reported to have heating issues. Aside from the MSI, Asus has always made amazing ventilation systems which successfully channel the air out and drag the cooler air inside. The graphics card and processor are separated with more of the vents which ensure that the hot airs will not collide.
Aside from everything, Asus should get the first reward for their ultimate innovative designs. Such are the GX laptop series starting from the ROG GX700 and now GX800, the only two laptops that run thanks to the water turbines extensions on the rear of the laptop.
Why not opt for Asus?
Despite many positive feedbacks, Asus comes with couple of drawbacks which prevent it from stepping up their game. The first problem is the Customer support. Even though they have vastly improved over the last couple of years, the customer support of Asus is merely disappointment. It takes them a long time to find the adequate answer, and in case the laptop breaks, it takes them a long time before they will replace a part.
Asus seldom focuses on other parts of the laptop other than the specifications and keyboards. Displays are often not clear enough or dim, and the audio often is misleading, full of distortion, and seldom loud enough to fill the room with the surrounding sound.
Asus G752
[amazon_link asins=’B01L2RQEK4′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’8881ebc7-4cca-11e7-a2b3-63c2619a4544′]One of the best gaming laptops that you can get for as much as a little above $1500 is certainly the Asus ROG G752.
It may not be as powerful as the G752VS OC edition which we reviewed a few months ago. But, it certainly provides the essential gaming experience every gamer is expecting from his gaming laptop, and more importantly, it is affordable. The G752 sports the Intel Core 7-6700HQ quad-core processor with 6MB cache which boosts up to 3.5 GHz in the turbo mode.
The RAM of 16 GB is more than sufficient for all the productivity threads and more importantly, is extendable to up to 32 GB. The laptop is also equipped with the GTX 1060M a budget VR-ready gaming graphics card with vast capabilities.
The metal build with the glowing orange ROG sign makes this laptop look superior compared to the competition, while the orange-red gaming keyboard feels deep, comfortable, and has fine key spacing which makes long typing sessions convenient.
The laptop stores a 1 TB 7200 RPM mechanical hard drive, and the 256 GB PCIE drive with amazing transfer speeds. The battery life of this laptop is bad, but we can cope with that given that the Asus G752 is a 17.3 gaming laptop.
The things that we liked
- Keyboard and macro keys
- Comfortable
- Great gaming performance
- Useful software
The things that we didn’t like
- Large
- Slow Battery Life
Reason for Recommending
The G752 is the perfect laptop when you are looking for a desktop replacement that you can heft around the house, certainly not outside, because the laptop is very heavy. It is perfect because of its advanced level of cooling, VR capabilities, and the useful software which increases the overall quality of graphics of the games. Also, its vividly colored display makes it perfect for the designers as well.
Summary
Asus ROG G752 offers solid gaming performance and along its configuration, it packs the 256 GB solid state drive. It has a powerful graphics card, and strong processor which make it good for other occasions too, while the vibrant display will ensure that everything is seen as realistic and amazing as it is. If you can live with its’ demanding and bulky ergonomics, it will provide great experience for the price.
#3. MSI Gaming Laptops
MSI knows how to make the simple look elegant and powerful, but it certainly lacks the aggressive elements of Asus, HP, and other laptop brands.
They devoted years into making pristine looking, strong laptops that will impress with their performance and other elements, but not with appearance.
The plastic build is replaced with the brushed Aluminum build that makes the gaming laptops look even more royal. The workstation laptops work absolutely great and swift, while the gaming laptops step up their game compared to the other laptop brands.
MSI manufactures the laptops of all styles and sizes and their most favorite and bought products include GT83VR, WT72 Workstation, and GT63VR lightweight and portable laptop
Why opt for MSI
MSI, just like Asus, excels when it comes to the innovation. Starting with the dual GPU systems, over the Tobii eye tracking, and finishing at the fully operating 17.3 inch gaming laptops with a programmable, mechanical keyboards of the impeccable quality. They didn’t go for the water cooling system like Asus did, but I give them that their innovation department is truly remarkable.
Free Damage protection is a feature only MSI has among the other laptop manufacturers. What does it consist of? Basically, after you’ve bought your laptop from MSI, you have a 30 days to register your laptop in order to receive free damage protection coverage in case of an occurring malfunction.
Why not opt for MSI?
Just like the case was with Asus, MSI also has problems with the customer support. They are not too courteous when communicating with their customers. More importantly, sometimes they appeared not to even know what model the talk was even about, or what kind of software they are distributing. It is also important to mention that the technical support lacks the appearance on social media such as Facebook or Twitter. We believe that would solve various problems.
The MSI laptops look very elegant and stylish. However, considering that all of them feature nearly the same metal chassis, the generic look of the laptops can get annoying over time of reviewing. This being said, apart from the RGB keyboards they should insert a more colorful touch to their laptops. We don’t say it needs the “look at me” appeal like some of other flagship brands, but a stripe here or there would be much more appreciated.
Another drawback is that the MSI laptops are all expensive. You will seldom find a model that you can buy for less than $1000 without buying years outdated laptop model. The release of the GTX 1050 Ti on laptops was fairly comforting. However, we would like to see more of the $800-$900 ranged gaming laptops.
MSI GL72 7RD-028 17.3″ Performance Gaming Laptop Core i7-7700HQ GTX 1050 16GB 128GB SSD + 1TB
[amazon_link asins=’B01MS1T197′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c8f1e458-4cca-11e7-b971-c54b2c298b09′]MSI GL72 has a lot to offer.
It is equipped with the powerful and vibrant display with the IPS panel, with great color accuracy and vibrancy.
Also, the viewing angles are just amazing, just like the response of the screen, which will help gamers who like to try themselves in the PvP games. The resolution it supports is 1920 x 1080 pixels on a 17.3 inch display. The laptop features an aluminum build with elegant, glowing black color.
However, the MSI let us down with the lack of the backlit keyboard. It packs up mainly the budget ranged parts, such as the GTX 1050 4 GB of dedicated memory graphics card, 16 GB of RAM, and the Intel Core i7-7700HQ. The GL72 is also rich in storage.
It features a 1 TB SATA drive with 7200 RPM which is incredibly fast, and perfect for saving old videos, family pictures, and old saved games.
Another storage option is the 128 GB M.2 SATA solid state drive with the swift transfer and accessing speeds. Saving, and loading a game has never been easier, and the laptop itself starts like the charm.
Other features include the Cooler Booster which optimizes the temperature in the laptop, in the graphics card and processor, steel series keyboard, and Nahimic audio enhancer which filters the audio to be in the great quality.
The things that we liked
- A lot of storage options
- Relatively affordable
- USB Type C port
- Solid gaming performance
The things that we didn’t like
- The keyboard doesn’t have the backlights. However, it is comfortable none the less.
- Short battery life
- Chunky
Reason for Recommending
MSI stands out with the elegant models, but also chunkier models. The MSI GL72 just like the GL62 will appeal to the users for its’ portability across the apartment, and the near desktop level of the performance. Thanks to the vibrant screen, the users can enjoy the video and photo editing, and using the laptop for various other purposes and not only for gaming.
Summary
Just like every 17.3 inch laptop, MSI GL72 lacks the powerful battery, and ergonomics which make it eligible for the LAN parties and traveling. However, it is the great value for the money for everyone who is looking for an inexpensive way to play even the most high end games, on reasonable settings, and get ahead of their enemies, and rivals in the PvP games.
#4. HP Gaming Laptops – the 4th place on our best gaming laptop brand journey
HP is taking the 4th place on our best gaming laptop brand journey, and it unveiled some exceptional performance laptops on its’ market. HP mainly focuses on the business suite laptops and Chromebooks such as HP Spectre and other models that mark its’ appearance.
However, the gaming creed consists of two lines known as HP Pavilion which covers the range of budget ranged gaming laptops to the HP Omen, flagship gaming laptops with a more aggressive appearance, but also more bold performance as well.
Spectre laptops are mostly recommended for the video editors and the photo editors. Mainly because the manufacturer focused on delivering vibrant, colorful, and detailed screen resolution that will establish more color accuracy, and quality outcome for the people who are working with the sensitive multimedia. Also, they were perfect for the writers because of their very comfortable keyboard.
For the more royal business suite, there are the EliteBook models, ultra-portable, stylish, thin, and masters at offering the royal performance for the fellow users. More importantly, they provide the reliability every productive worker expects from their laptop, thanks to the long-lasting battery life.
HP likes to experiment with their design, offering the most premium looking, and colorful laptop editions. Both Spectre and Envy look extremely stylish. While the Spectre can take its’ pride in being one of the thinnest laptop series, which doesn’t sacrifice the overall performance, meaning that we really admire how HP managed to pack up so many utilities inside such a compact and thin case.
The HP Omen series are a different story. While they look aggressive and full of a badass attitude, you will notice that when you get closer its’ nothing more than a plastic build. We have hoped that HP will follow up after Asus, and MSI. However, we were apparently wrong.
Why opt for HP?
Like we have mentioned before, people who want to shop for a laptop have a lot to select from. Starting from the EliteBook, Chromebooks, and Spectre, to the gaming series of Pavilion and Omen. We have revealed the reviews of great variety of HP laptops, and we were more impressed as they kept coming. Its wide selection always leaves more space for the innovations which we are hoping to see in the future.
Compared to Asus and MSI, the HP can take pride in being the brand with the best customer support, in both general and technical terms of information. Whenever we have interacted with them, we have been prompted with the valuable solutions and quick response. If you are trying to reach out to them over the social media, they are up to date there as well, unlike Asus. Also, the HP official website is full of blog posts and manuals that can vastly help. For instance, when I bought my HP Pavilion, I had a problem with formatting the SSD, the technical support over their website was absolutely wonderful and solved my problem within the minutes.
All the HP notebooks look charismatic and stylish, while the Omen looks bold and royal. If you are looking for a futuristic but not too aggressive appearance, HP will be your best friend.
Why not opt for HP?
Aside from the Spectre and Elitebook notebooks, we cannot make any significant appearance of the quality displays. Most screens on the Pavilion and Omen gaming laptops look dim, and as if they cannot provide a clear picture unless the brightness is set on 100%. This being said, springing for HP gaming series also means adjusting to their brightness level.
Poor battery life is also what signifies these laptops. The batteries cannot survive for more than 3 to 4 hours, which is merely disappointing. Should you do something important outside on your laptop, make sure to sit somewhere where there’s a spare power socket to use.
HP Omen 17 (2018)
[amazon_link asins=’B01LZWROJC’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’83b72f82-3ee6-11e7-aa01-2f5f7f0df85d’]HP Omen 17 is a definite VR-ready powerhouse.
Compared to its’ black predecessors, the 2018 model sports the Charcoal design which looks incredibly trendy. The design is also bulkier, which is understandable compared to its’ performance.
The Butterfly like Omen dark red sign is etched in the middle, while after the lid stretching you’re welcomed by a backlit chiclet keyboard and a 17.3 inch display. The components decorating this model are the quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ, SkyLake processor with up to 3.5 GHz in turbo mode.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 can make any game kneel and is fully compatible and operational when it comes to the VR games which take over the world with the speed of light. The display is incredibly vivid, thanks to the UHD 4K IPS panel with the anti-glare and finish-matte features, with the maximal resolution of 3840 x 2160.
The laptop with 32 GB of RAM should run pretty much everything without a sweat, and considering that there are no games that demand more than 8 GB we don’t recommend that you extend the RAM to up to 64 GB.
The battery life is not great, but we should give the HP a medal for making such a bulky gaming laptop last nearly four hours.
The things that we liked
- Sleek
- Perfect gaming performance
- VR Ready
- 4K vivid display
- Solid Battery Life
The things that we didn’t like
- Can occasionally get very hot and noisy.
Reason for Recommending
Among the Strix and ROG gaming laptops, the HP omen makes its’ significant appearance as a very durable, powerful gaming laptop, that sports none the less than a GTX 1070 M graphics card, this can be a reason for you to purchase it without spending more than $2500. If you are looking for the strict and professional level of gaming, HP Omen 17 is an ideal choice for you.
Summary
Being VR ready, HP Omen 17 is a perfect option for the high-end demanding games. The laptop can provide a top-notch gaming experience thanks to the high-end graphics. However, its’ overall performance shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you can cope with occasional system noise, the HP Omen 17 represents an excellent option.
#5. Dell (Alienware) – Best Gorgeous and Slim Gaming Laptops
Dell built its’ name by making absolutely gorgeous and slim designs for their business and gaming laptops. Our favorite are definitely the XPS series, Inspiron, and the Alienware brand that is currently one of the best, and most pristine laptop designs in the world of gaming.
Alienware is certainly the brand that stands out the most compared to the other models, which is why we will mainly review the Alienware 15 R3 laptop when we get to that point.
Why opt for Dell?
The Alienware laptops look extremely attractive and stylish. They do kinda look aggressive, but not too painful to the eyes, like the Asus laptops can look at their full strength. They mainly feature an all metal build, mostly Aluminum and a futureproofed appearance which leads to conclusions that they are from another planet, hence Alienware.
The Inspiron and XPS 13 and 15 that we have already written about look very compact and slim, making them eligible for travel and hefting even through the busy buses.
Dell also offers great warranty options available for the laptops. Should the laptop meet with some issues, Dell will get to fix it or send a replacement as soon as possible.
Why not opt for Dell?
Overpriced. This shouldn’t be the issue for the Alienware laptops. Prices on Amazon are more or less reasonable for the metal builds. However, knowing that the most hardcore gamers are mostly college and high school students, setting such a confident price tag on their laptops can simply be a step too far.
The customer service is better than Asus and MSI, but definitely worse than Lenovo and HP. Given that they offer an amazing warranty option, we expected a more responsive and accurate customer support on the team.
Alienware 15 R3
[amazon_link asins=’B01LY2I7B6′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’e60436c7-4cca-11e7-ae11-0d10c257505f’]Laptop of the gaming kings and queens, Alienware 15 R3 is one of the most affordable Alienware gaming laptops with such a superior gaming performance.
Its’ G-Sync enabled display works in combination with the GTX 1060 in order to create superior HD look, and bring gamer’s favorite characters into life with amazing color accuracy and the attention to the detail.
Alienware 15 features a full metal build, purple backlit keyboards with the backlit touchpad. Both keyboard and touchpad are fairly responsive and comfortable for the use.
Just like the MSI’s flagship model, the Alienware Tobiix eye tracking interaction can vastly improve the world of technology, and we hope to see that on gaming laptops more often.
In terms of specs, the Alienware 15 R3 comes in both Intel Core i7 6700 and 7700HQ editions, so which option seems more affordable to you, you can choose. The GTX 1070 M works perfectly in syncing with the G-Sync and functionally handles multithreading, VR, and even the most texture detail requiring operations.
In combination with 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage with 128 GB of the solid state drive, its’ an eternal gaming powerhouse which is also eligible for more high-end options such as video editing and production which demands a powerful display, and even more powerful configuration.
The battery is mediocre given that this is a 15.6 inch display, but with specifications and performance as this, the battery life doesn’t bother us too much.
The things that we liked
- Attractive look
- Detailed Display
- Comfortable Keyboard
- G-Sync and the VR enabled GPU.
The things that we didn’t like
- Slightly heavy
- Milding battery life
Reason for Recommending
The attractive chassis, top-notch gaming experience thanks to the GTX 1070, and the wonderful display and audio are all things that make Alienware 15, among other Alienware laptops gaming powerhouses eligible for more purposes than just gaming.
Summary
Dell’s high-end gaming brand Alienware has been undergoing the massive improvements in term of display, keyboards, touchpads, and more importantly the appearance. We have already written about that in our prior posts. The outcome is wonderful, and the best example for that is the Alienware 15 R3, high-end gaming laptop.
The KabyLake processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a lot of storage options make it stand out from the sea among the most powerful gaming laptops and outshine the others. If you are looking for the premium design and even more premium performance, you are not making a mistake with the Alienware laptops.
Final Words
In the end of the day, the brand you choose matters as much as the performance of every gaming laptop. Some brands stand out with their technical support which can be crucial aside from the reviews, while some excel at it, but fail at some other components that also offer optimal performance.
Whether are you looking for a gaming laptop based on the brand, we recommend that you do a thorough research before you buy something that may not bring the satisfaction you were looking for.[amazon_link asins=’B06WVMJ713′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’lincolnlabs02-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’18c7d50f-4ccf-11e7-ba81-a57dbfdd5248′]
