How to Take Good Pictures With Your iPhone: The Best Tips and Tricks

The iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones out there, with 41.9% of smartphone users using iPhones

The iPhone is one of the most popular phones because of how powerful the camera is.

Are you trying to learn how to take good pictures with your iPhone? If yes, then check out our best tips and tricks here.

Use the iPhone Camera Shortcut

If you see something that you want to take a picture of quickly, there is a shortcut to access your camera.

You can get other third-party apps that will take pictures on your phone, but you won’t be able to access them as fast as the default camera.

To use the shortcut and quickly access your iPhone’s camera, you can swipe to the right on your iPhone home screen. You won’t have to wait for the app to load or scroll through your page to be able to find it and take your picture.

Use the Rule of Thirds

When you do start to take a picture, you should remember the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds says that you should divide your photo up into thirds. Try and place the main object of the phone in the middle third of the photo.

To help you with that, you can have your iPhone turn on gridlines to help you line it all up.

To turn it on, go to Settings > Photos & Camera. Then you can enable the grid switch.

This can be extremely helpful when you use the iPhone panorama setting.

Turn Off Your Flash

When you are taking pictures, you should try and turn off your flash. While the flash has improved throughout generations of iPhones, at the end of the day, it’s still an LED light.

It’s normally not powerful enough and can really cause your phones to have an awkward hue or color.

If you can, try shooting with natural light instead. If you are shooting at night, you can try and use iPhone’s new Night Mode.

If you don’t mind carrying some extra gear, there are also some artificial lights you can use that will create a more natural photo than the phone’s built-in flash.

Use the Volume Button

If you are taking pictures with the iPhone’s default camera, you can use the volume buttons on the side of your phone to help take the picture instead of pressing on the screen.

This may seem stupid, but it can actually help you have better angles when you are using the phone. It can also help you hold the camera more stable so that you won’t take as many blurry photos.

If you have headphones connected to your phone, you can also use the volume buttons on that to capture photos.

Take More Than One Photo

When you are taking photos, you should also make sure that you are taking more than one photo.

All good photographers will tell you that you need to take hundreds, maybe even thousands of photos during one photoshoot. This helps to ensure that you really do get the best shot possible.

The more photos that you take, the higher your odds will be that you will get the perfect shot that you were trying for.

Work With Different Perspectives

When you are taking multiple pictures of the same thing, you should also try different perspectives. Sometimes finding a different perspective can help bring the photograph to life.

Most photographers start to shoot at chest level when they are just starting out. However, this may not make your photo stand out.

Try getting down low or climbing up high to try and get an interesting and unique shot.

You can also move your horizon life from the center to give it a more interesting shot. These small changes can make or break a photo.

Turn on HDR Mode

Another thing you should make sure you do is to turn on the HDR mode.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range which is the ratio of the light and darkness in a photo. If there are scenes with a lot of details and colors in them, your iPhone may not be able to properly expose all of the areas in the shot.

For example, if the sky has beautiful highlights, the people you may be photographing may be in a shadow. However, if you focus on the people in the foreground, the sky might be whitened out.

However, HDR will automatically adjust all of the exposure levels. It takes three different photos and combines them to make sure you have a perfectly-exposed shot.

Make sure you have this option turned on if you are taking landscape or still-life shots.

Use Portrait Mode

Portrait mode started becoming available on iPhone models with the iPhone 7 Plus.

When you use Portrait mode, the Camera app creates a photo with a blurred background, making it look like the photo was taken with a professional DSLR camera.

The Portrait mode will help you figure out how to frame your subject and how far back to stand to make sure that the background is blurred while the subject is completely in focus.

You can also change the effects to enhance or edit the colors in the picture.
