5 Organizational Tips for Packing Up Electronics for a Move

Since we live in a golden era of technology, most likely, your organization will have several electronic devices to pack before moving. Tablets, televisions, computers, and sound systems are costly investments, and you must ensure you don’t damage them when moving. Here are five ideas to consider when packing your electronics for a big move.

1. Create an Inventory List

It is an excellent idea to list all your electronics and every component that goes with them. It’s also wise to create a list for each box you will use to confirm that all the items and accessories are there before you assemble the electronics again.

2. Backup and Save Your Data

You need a contingency plan if your equipment gets damaged in transit or storage. Although you will probably pack your electronics with added protection, all it takes is a fall during the move, and all your files and documents will be destroyed. To protect yourself from any mishap by backing up all your data before unplugging your devices. Save any crucial and sensitive information stored on your computer on an external drive.

After backing up your data, please turn off your electronic devices and unplug them from the power strips. Remove all the wires and cords, bind them with twist ties, and label them.

3. Hire Help

It is okay to want to move independently; however, you sometimes need help before moving. Research a reliable moving company and see what they can offer you. Expert movers come with their own supplies, such as bubble wrap and special boxes for storing your electronics, thus saving you lots of trouble. A professional mover will handle all your devices carefully and ensure they reach the destination safely so you can focus your efforts on other matters and help by delegating tasks as needed.

4. Use the Right Packing Materials

To pack your devices, you will need the following:

  • Sturdy boxes that are a bit larger than the electronic devices you want to put in them. If you still have the original packaging for the item, use it.
  • Plastic wrap/ packing blankets to avoid damage and scratches.
  • Strong packing tape to ensure your boxes will remain closed.
  • Anti-static packaging materials such as bubble wrap (electronic devices are hypersensitive to static electricity)

Use blankets, towels, and sheets to fill any space in the boxes. This will help conserve space and save you lots of money on packing materials.

5. Be Mindful of the Temperature

Electronic devices are highly sensitive to extreme temperatures. Cold temperatures cause metallic parts to contract, and this weakens soldered components. LCDs (liquid crystal displays) can even freeze in extreme cold.

Heat damages your electronics in two ways. Metal parts expand in the presence of heat, thus stressing soldered connections, and warm air contains more moisture, which is highly detrimental to electronics.

If your devices should be stored, ensure they are kept in an area with an even temperature. When moving over a long distance, ensure the boxes are well insulated using appropriate packing materials to protect your equipment from extreme temperatures.

If you’ve followed these tips but are still nervous about packing your electronics by yourself, seek the help of a professional moving service. Most moving companies have professionals who will assess your electronics beforehand and pack them for you.
